10th May 2022 – London, UK – CovertSwarm, a global provider of continuous cyber attack services was today featured on the BBC’s “Rip Off Britain” which aired at 09:15 UK time on BBC One. This was their third collaboration with the BBC as the show’s cyber security partner.

Following their previously popular appearances, the Rip Off Britain team approached CovertSwarm to shed light on the increasing prevalence of Twitter, Instagram, and other social media accounts being hijacked from their genuine holders by cyber attackers. The show also focused upon the new threat being posed by bad actors impersonating ‘ethical hackers’ who contact affected users claiming to be able to support the ‘hacking back’ of their stolen accounts.

CovertSwarm Hive Leader, Doug Tognarelli, provided the BBC’s viewers with insights and practical advice as to the steps they can take to avoid their social media accounts being hijacked, and the safest routes to regain access in the event of account theft.

Doug Tognarelli, CovertSwarm Hive Leader, commented “As Rip Off Britain’s trusted cyber advisor it was a privilege to be able to share CovertSwarm’s experience and guidance around the phenomenon of social media account hijacking. It can be deeply disturbing to have your social media account stolen, and then to be further exploited by criminals claiming to offer ‘ethical hacker’ support to regain control over it. We strongly advocate educating the community on cyber security matters and trust that our support to the BBC will help viewers avoid cyber risks through the adoption of straight-forward security practices.”

The episode is available on the BBC iPlayer: Rip Off Britain – Series 14, Episode 7
